Before Christine Agrimaleria or whatever her name is got to him, Redman was my favorite MC ever, I saw him in concert at the Brixton Fridge back in 93 and that was a hard ass show, a proper hip hop scenario.
I remember outside in the long line of people waiting to get in, bods getting mugged for there trainers and such..woooo it was kinda crazy, but we survived, mainly because me and my mates were really tough and street, although I had rarely been south of the river back then so I was actually plopping my pantalones.
But whatever the street politics back then, within the hip hop scene there was a proper vibe, a feeling of belonging to something special, something real, something that spoke for us.
I have no idea what your average 18 year old feels about the ‘rap’ music they listen too now days, I suppose the music that is made must reflect their attitudes, which is what scares me actually……but who who am I to say anything on the subject, I just wonder if the kids have the same intensity of emotion to the culture they exist within as us oldies did.

The recent show where big bad muva luving London done battle with it’s snotty nosed little brother Brighton and gave it a couple of slaps, has had a little feature produced thats on youtube now…It’s one of those magazine type productions with a few different items, if you can be arseholed to watch, skip to the 3.00 minute point and look at the lovely blonde lady talk about the show with the equally lovely Zachy boy Walsh and there’s also a quick natter with raggedy old me too.

I used to be really, really crap at anything to do with spray can work, it just didn’t make sense to me, I used to wonder how the hell the graff dudes done all the little details. I’d give it a go and there would be drips and splatters everywhere and I’d have hissy fits and cry because I hate not being able to do things other people can do….muva loving toe rags…. So I would hate all graff type bods for their oh so special skills.
Then the man like Edmundo Cavill came in to my life and he gave me some spray can knowledge, I have learnt a few ting a lings since, but I can honestly say that spray can work ain’t my bag baby, but at least I can now use a can and achieve only minimal drips as apposed to the waterfalls I created before…..hurrah hurrah.

BRIGHTON VS LONDON

Wicked event this was, an artist led show, curated and organized by creative peeps whose aim was to transform a space into a real interesting hub. What Zac and Miranda, (the guys behind this) are doing is bringing energetic and lovely artistic people together to do progressive, groovy things outside the constraints of the gallery world, fuck sitting around twidderling your thumbs whilst the gallery bod tells you what to do with your shit.
I want to see more artists getting involved with these kind of projects, the problem is, lots of artists frown on this, the thinking is the gallery does it right and it will only be cheesy puff outcomes if you work outside that system. We are all just becoming lazy and reliant on a pretence, get off your bum bums and get involved.
There is no single outlet for ones creative energies, the gallery system no longer has the strangle hold over the artist and the reality is there are very few gallerists who have the first clue about what the desires are of an artist.
I’m not in this for money, I want to do interesting stuff with my art around like minded individuals and I’m not going to allow money mindsets to hinder that, I’m aware of the role of the gallery world, but don’t make me feel like you are the one that leads me, fuck that, we work together dudes, I’m always hearing about too many of these gallery places disrespecting the artists that show with them….numpty mo fo’s…..
Wow, I ranted again, and I liked it,

What I wanted to say though is that last thursdays shin dig gives hope to all artists that with care and commitment and a strong creative mindset, wonderful events like the Brighton vs London show can happen…much love to everyone that helped with the curating and made it happen, and much love to the over zealous lass on the door who refused to let me back in the spot because I was looking like a undesirable, she was really good at her job apparently.

WHITECROSS STREET PARTY EC1

Whitecross street is a little road down in the east end of London, it’s a rather unassuming spot, it’s got a small market with some food stalls and some cafes and there used to be a record shop there but thats long gone, as are most record shops in the big city……
But on the 24th july 2010 for two days the road will be transformed into a art filled festive wonder land courtesy of the guys who helped organize the awesome Mutate shows.
There’s going to be creative joy by lots of funky fresh artists emblazoned on the street and the local community will be encouraged to get involved with schools and such contributing to the event.

TAGGING WITH JAMES JESSOP

Back in the day when I was like eleven or twelve, all my chums started to write squiggly lined, unreadable messy things on walls and in their school books and such, I was intrigued and checked out that really famous book that all graffiti people refer too as getting them into a life of criminal activity, ‘Subway Art’ and realized my adolescent comrades where ‘tagging’
The bloody tikes where destroying public property in order to shout to the world…..”I’m here, I exist” or maybe that they where all just wolly teenagers that wanted to follow the latest craze..
Anyways, Mr James Jessop of the Burning candy gang has made a short film about the wonders of tagging……I’m now off out to make up for all the years of criminal abstinence, check the streets for my tag M@ Small.
