THE JAZZ MIND
Wednesday, March 30th, 2011The jazz mentality, the fuck you I do what I want, how I want. I do not pander to others and for those that don’t understand me, I don’t compromise, I keep doing what I know, what I feel is me.
I don’t fear travelling down this path even when it seems no one is travelling with me and there is no one listening. I just play the way I play knowing that it comes from a pure place within….
Melodramatic of course but the fact is the jazz greats rolled this way, there was no belief that the music they created would bring any mega monetary rewards, there was no desire to please in order to find success……..
And the need to please, this is the problem that revolves around many creatives today, so many individuals are constantly trying to find ways to please, to find acceptance from the cultural elite, the purveyors of taste.
Fair enough of course but when you spend so much time trying to please others that you no longer place yourself within your work, when what you do is devoid of you and can no longer be distinguished from anything else within your genre that is a damn shame
Chuck D of the group Public Enemy speaks of the jazz mindset in a recent interview, check it out
