CLOSE ENCOUNTERS
Wednesday, October 21st, 2009Adapta Gallery’s third curated project will be held on November 12th - November 29th 2009, with a show in Tokyo called Close Encounters. The show consists of 8 British-based artists, including Best Ever, Cyclops, D*Face, David Bray, Matt Small, Sickboy, Word To Mother and Vesna Parchet.
The variety of work on show is eclectic, and that is precisely the reason why we chose them in the first place. From D*Face’s two-dimensional graphic art to the rich textures of emerging artist Vesna Parchet’s styled character-based paintings, a plethora of mediums, emotions and messages are employed for the viewer to digest.
This particular show is very close to our hearts as we are finally able to put together an amazing line up of artists to produce works for our Tokyo readers and Japanese collectors to see in person. We have been interviewing and working on projects with so many talented British creatives over the years and to finally curate our own show in Tokyo for our main audience is a true honour.

REPRESENT: PORTRAITURE SHOW
Sunday, October 11th, 2009So, this is what I’ve been working on recently. After my last solo show earlier this year, I felt the need to do some soul searching. I’ve had a good couple of years, painting away, doing what I love. For me though, it’s all well and good making a career selling work, but what else can I do with this, where else can I take it, is my focus solely on producing products or is there something more constructive I can do with my talent and position. When you start out in any creative field, it’s important to get your foot hold in the industry, you work your arse off and thats your main priority, I don’t frown on that at all. But when your all good in the hood and your safe and sound, surely there doesn’t have to be so much emphasize on being a ’slave artist’, in that all you do is make stuff for your gallery, being tied into contracts and obligations, you can look at other ways to use your art.
I simply can’t be arsed to continue focusing on painting only for galleries, I want to do other things, the art workshops is one thing and getting this show together is another.
The opportunity to do this project came about through a desire to turn a awful negative in my life into a positive. I lost a shed load of money because of the leonard st gallery. Opportunities to reek revenge on the owners has been very real. and very much rightful in people’s that I know, but i’ve kept it peaceful, much to there disdain. It’s not nice being seen as a chief, but for me I see the positive out of that scenario, that I get to use the space for free. I can put on a exhibition where the artist and charity art projects are the only ones to benifit, no sharks, no middle men, only those that truly care about the artist and their creative progression.
The gallery is now Blackall Studios and is a events space, Im well aware that it shouldn’t exist, Im aware lots of people lost out, I Understand the artists that say the place is riddled with bad vibes. Yes I still want to burn the place down but I know I can do good stuff there, I can use it to do something constructive, not destructive.
This exhibition gives us artists the opportunity to exhibit with one another, to work together outside the poxy commercial gallery constraints. to see ourselves pursue common goals, connect with one another, blah, blah, blah, blah de blah.
Anyways, I want the show to be groovy and the preview to be a wicked event. There will be the wonderfully talented Floetic Lara singing on the night, alongside the extremely funky band Raw Essence, providing us all with musical joy. I’m also thinking of releasing some cheap and cheerful vinyl lino cuts at the preview, if I’m feeling in the mood.
It’s all about good vibes and progressive minds.
I do hope peeps can make it down.
